World Health Day

April 7th is World Health Day, a day dedicated to bringing awareness to current world health issues. The current "theme" for this year is Diabetes.

Sadly, about 350 million people in the world have diabetes and that number is expected to double in the next two decades (according to the World Health Organization). Diabetes raises blood sugar levels, which could negatively effect organ functions as well as increase the risk for heart problems.

Diabetes has been linked with obesity, poor diet, and smoking, therefore preventable with better food choices and a healthier lifestyle. I found the following article most helpful in explaining the simple steps to lower your risk.

Although it seems challenging to find the time in our busy lives to exercise or eat healthy when we don't always have the energy and patience, it is important to make that effort and plan accordingly. Brisk walks or bicycle rides around the block alone or with the family to get some fresh air and bonding time. If not an "outdoors" type of person, especially with summer heat approaching, crank up some toons to move to and dance! Prepare healthy meals ahead of time to save time, choosing non-processed foods for better nutrition. With on-line access, it is easy to search and find healthy dinner ideas, etc. I'm a huge fan of Pinterest for most of my ideas. Don't forget to take care of yourself!
