Michigan's New Security ID Law: What It Means and How Specialist ID Can Help

As of November 4, 2025, Michigan now requires all licensed private security guards, alarm technicians, and access control personnel to wear visible ID badges while on duty. This rule passed under the Private Security Business and Security Alarm Act
aims to make security personnel easily identifiable to the public and law enforcement.

If your team isn’t already equipped with proper ID gear, now is the time to act.

What the Law Requires

Under the updated rules from Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), every on-duty employee must wear an ID that displays:

  • Their last name
  • The official name of the licensed security agency

The badge must be clearly visible on the outermost garment: coats, jackets, and tactical gear included. Hidden IDs or noncompliant badges will put you at risk.

For full legal details, view the official Michigan rulebook (PDF).

Stay Compliant with Specialist ID

1. Custom Photo ID Badges

Display your agency name, employee photo, and role on durable ID cards designed for all-day visibility and wear.

2. Badge Holders & Armbands

Make sure badges stay visible even over jackets with armband badge holders or clear vinyl holders that clip to outerwear.

3. Lanyards & Badge Reels

Keep IDs front and center with secure retractable reels or breakaway lanyards for daily use.

Avoid Fines and Penalties

Non-compliance can lead to license suspension or criminal penalties in Michigan. Outfitting your team with the right ID solutions helps ensure your business stays protected and professional.
