How to Replace Your Evolis Printhead: A Step-by-Step Guide
Share
The printhead is arguably the most vital component of your thermal transfer ID card printer, as it directly determines the clarity and quality of every card you produce. Over time, factors like high-volume use or dust accumulation can lead to "blown pixels," which appear as white lines, streaks, or unprinted spots on your badges.
While the printhead is a sensitive part, it is designed for easy field replacement, meaning you can restore your printer to factory-level performance without shipping it away for repairs.
Before You Start: Choosing the Correct Replacement
Compatibility is critical. Using the wrong part can lead to malfunctions or voided warranties. Ensure you have the specific genuine OEM part for your model:
- For Zenius and Primacy (1st Gen): You will need the Evolis S10084 Replacement Printhead.
- For Primacy 2: This model requires the Evolis S10381 Replacement Printhead. Note that this is not backwards compatible with the original Primacy.
- For Legacy Models (Pebble 4, Dualys 3, Quantum 2, and Securion): Use the Evolis S10000 Replacement Printhead.
Pro-Tip: Before beginning, unplug the printer from its power source and avoid touching the new printhead with bare hands, as skin oils can damage the thermal elements.
Step 1: Remove the Defective Printhead
- Open the printer cover and locate the existing printhead.
- Find the pressure plate situated behind the printhead. Press it to release the lugs from the holding fork.
- Carefully tilt the printhead downward to access the connector.
- Disconnect the cable gently. Do not force the mechanism, as these parts are fragile.
Step 2: Install the New Printhead
- Locate the PKN number on the white barcode label of your new printhead. Write this number down, as you will need it to configure the software later.
- Hold the new printhead vertically (connector facing up) and align the lugs with the guides.
- Press the assembly into the forks until you hear a distinct click.
- Reconnect the cable by pressing firmly on both sides of the connector to ensure a secure fit.
Step 3: Software Configuration
Your printer must be "told" that a new head is installed to calibrate the correct voltage and resistance. Failing to enter the PKN correctly can result in poor print quality and may void your warranty.
In Evolis Print Center: Go to Properties > Maintenance > Print head replacement and enter the PKN number.
In Evolis Premium Suite 2: Select your printer, navigate to Assistance and Maintenance > Maintenance > Print head replacement, and enter the code.
Click Validate to finalize the setup.
Step 4: Mandatory Cleaning
Replacing the printhead requires an immediate cleaning cycle. The printer will actually block any print jobs until this operation is completed.
Use a dedicated cleaning kit, such as an adhesive cleaning card and a cleaning swab, to ensure the equipment remains in perfect working condition. Gently rub the cleaning pen or swab across the new printhead from left to right to ensure it is free of any residue.
Regular maintenance—ideally every time you change your ribbon—is the best way to extend the life of your new printhead and protect your investment.

Analogy for Understanding: Think of your printer like a high-performance car. The printhead is the engine—it does the heavy lifting to create the output. Just as you wouldn't drive a new engine without fresh oil, you shouldn't use a new printhead without a fresh cleaning cycle to ensure everything runs smoothly.
