The carabiner attaches to your belt loop, bag strap or a number of other places for a secure grip. Press the release latch on the carabiner if you need to take it off. You won't have to take it off, however, if you are trying to show your card or swipe it, as the 36" retractable cord should allow for plenty of reach.
