ID Card Print quality troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

Most print quality faults on a card printer come from three places: the printhead, the cards, or the ribbon. This guide covers the symptoms we are asked about most, what usually causes them, and what to check first.

Symptom to cause

What you see Usual cause Check first
A white line running the length of every card, in the same place Debris on the printhead, or a failed printhead element Clean the printhead. If the line stays after cleaning, the element is dead and the printhead needs replacing.
Whole image faded or washed out Print settings, wrong ribbon type, or a dirty printhead Confirm the ribbon matches the printer model, then raise the darkness or heat setting in the driver.
Random specks and blotches in different places each card Dust on the cards or a loaded cleaning roller Replace the cleaning roller or tape, then run cleaning cards.
Smears or streaks in the direction the card travels Contamination on the rollers Run a cleaning card through the feed path.
Colors wrong or offset from the artwork Ribbon panel alignment, or a sensor reading the wrong panel Reseat the ribbon, then recalibrate the ribbon sensor from the printer menu or utility.
Image cut off at one edge Card size or image position settings Check the driver is set to CR80, then adjust image position.
Ribbon snapping mid print Heat set too high, or a ribbon not made for the printer Lower the heat setting and confirm the part number is correct for your model.
Cards jamming or double feeding Card thickness setting, warped cards, or worn feed rollers Check the thickness lever, then try a fresh sleeve of cards from the middle of the box.
Nothing prints and no error appears Driver or print queue, not the printer Print the printer's own self test. If that works, the fault is on the computer side.

Before replacing any part: run a full cleaning cycle and print a test card. A large share of print quality calls are solved by cleaning, and cleaning first stops you replacing parts that were never broken.

Clean before you diagnose

Cleaning cards run through the card path and lift debris off the rollers. The right kit depends on your brand:

The cleaning roller is a separate item from cleaning cards, and it is replaced rather than cleaned.

When it is the printhead

One test separates a dirty printhead from a damaged one. Clean it, then print a solid block of color across a card. Debris moves or disappears. A dead element leaves a line in exactly the same position every time, and no amount of cleaning changes it.

At that point the part gets replaced, for example the Evolis S10084 for Zenius and Primacy or the HID Fargo 86091 for the HDP5000 series. Printheads are the most expensive wear part on the printer, which is the practical argument for cleaning on schedule rather than when something looks wrong.

When it is the card

Cards cause faults that look like printer faults. Mismatched stock produces poor ink transfer, and cards stored badly warp enough to jam. If print quality drops when you open a new box, test a card from an older box before changing any settings. Our notes on PVC against composite stock cover which printers need which.

If you print text and logos rather than full photographs, a half panel ribbon uses less color per card and costs less to run. That is covered in the half panel guide.
