The HID FARGO HDP5000e is a high-definition retransfer ID card printer built for medium-to-large organizations — corporations, universities, healthcare facilities, and government agencies — that need vibrant, secure, professional-grade credentials. This configuration, part number 096680 (also listed as 96680), is the dual-sided model with an attached dual-side simultaneous lamination module. USB 2.0, Ethernet, and an internal print server are all standard.
The attached dual-side lamination module laminates the front and back of each card simultaneously, applying thermal transfer or PolyGuard overlaminates — clear or holographic — for maximum durability and tamper resistance. HID does not recommend ABS or PVC cards in the lamination module; use composite, PET, PETG, or polycarbonate stock.
Built on seven generations of FARGO retransfer technology, the HDP5000e prints at 300 dpi onto HDP film that is then fused to the card surface, producing sharp, true-to-life color with over-the-edge coverage — even on uneven surfaces like smart cards. In batch mode it produces up to 178 cards per hour in YMC color or 133 per hour in YMCK with transfer. A graphical OLED display and 1 GB of memory keep operation simple and fast, and each print ribbon includes a replaceable cleaning roller.
Security comes standard: resin scramble data protection renders used ribbon panels unreadable, TLS encryption protects data in transit, password protection locks down printer access, and the optional YMCFK ribbon adds a fluorescing panel visible only under UV light. The printer accepts CR-80 cards from 30 to 50 mil — ABS, laminated PVC, PET, PETG, proximity, smart, and magnetic stripe stock — with a 100-card input cartridge and 200-card output hopper. HID backs it with a four-year printer warranty, one year of loaner coverage in the U.S., and a lifetime printhead warranty.

What is the difference between the HDP5000e and the original HDP5000?
The HDP5000e is the next generation of the discontinued HDP5000, built on the same seventh-generation retransfer platform. It adds a graphical OLED display, 1 GB of memory, an updated electronics platform, TLS encryption, and a four-year warranty with one year of U.S. loaner coverage. It uses the same 84500-series HDP film and 845xx ribbons, so supplies carry over.
What makes retransfer (HDP) printing better than direct-to-card?
A direct-to-card printer prints straight onto the card surface, so print quality depends on the card and the edges stay unprinted. The HDP5000e prints in reverse onto HDP film and fuses that film to the card, producing sharper, more vibrant images with true over-the-edge coverage — even on uneven surfaces like smart cards and proximity cards. The film layer also adds durability and tamper resistance.
What supplies does the HDP5000e need?
Two things: a print ribbon and HDP retransfer film. The standard combination is the 084511 YMCK full-color ribbon (500 prints) with 084500 clear HDP film (1,500 prints). Ribbon options also include YMC (750 prints), dual-sided YMCKK, YMCFK with a UV fluorescing security panel, and premium resin black K (3,000 prints). Every compatible supply is listed above.
Can the HDP5000e print on both sides of a card?
Yes. It comes in single-sided and dual-sided versions, and the dual-sided models print the front and back of each card automatically. A single-sided unit can be field-upgraded later with the 096001 dual-side printing module. Use the selector above to choose your configuration.
What encoding options are available?
Depending on the configuration you select above: an ISO magnetic stripe encoder (dual high- and low-coercivity, tracks 1, 2, and 3 — dual-sided models), an OMNIKEY 5127CK Mini contactless encoder (iCLASS SE/SR/Seos, MIFARE Classic, DESFire EV1/EV2), an OMNIKEY 5127SI programmer encoder that adds 125 kHz HID Prox reading and can program the HID Access Control Application area, and an OMNIKEY 5122D contact smart card encoder (dual-sided models only). Encoding happens inline as each card prints.
What are the lamination options?
The HDP5000e offers a single-side lamination module or a dual-side simultaneous lamination module that laminates the front and back of the card simultaneously. Both accept 0.25 mil thermal transfer overlaminates and 0.6 or 1.0 mil PolyGuard overlaminates, in clear or holographic designs. HID advises against ABS and PVC cards in the lamination module — use composite, PET, PETG, or polycarbonate stock.
What cards does it accept?
Standard CR-80 cards from 30 to 50 mil thick — ABS, laminated PVC, PET, PETG, proximity, smart, and magnetic stripe cards. For best retransfer results HID recommends UltraCard Premium composite (082136) or UltraCard PC polycarbonate (082289) stock; lamination configurations should always use composite or polycarbonate cards.
Does the HDP5000e work with Mac?
No. HID publishes Windows (10, 11, Server 2016/2019/2022) and Linux drivers for the HDP5000e, but no macOS driver. Current downloads are in the Drivers section higher up on this page.
How fast does it print?
In batch mode, up to 178 cards per hour in YMC full color, 133 per hour in YMCK with transfer, and 109 per hour dual-sided (YMCKK). Adding simultaneous dual-side lamination, a YMCK card takes about 33 seconds and a YMCKK card about 44 seconds.
Can I add options after I buy?
Yes — the HDP5000e is fully modular and field-upgradeable. Available upgrade kits include the 096001 dual-side printing module, 096201 magnetic stripe encoder (dual-sided units), 096277 OMNIKEY 5127SI and 096278 OMNIKEY 5127CK Mini encoders, 096279 OMNIKEY 5122 contact encoder (dual-sided units), the 096270 dual input hopper, and the 089223 200-card locking input hopper.
What warranty does it include, and is Specialist ID an authorized dealer?
The HDP5000e carries a four-year printer warranty that includes one year of free printer loaner coverage in the U.S., plus a lifetime printhead warranty with unlimited passes when you use HID-certified supplies. Specialist ID is an authorized HID FARGO reseller, so your printer, supplies, and warranty are fully backed by HID.
