Overview

About this card

The HID iCLASS 2080 is the clamshell version of the iCLASS credential: the same 13.56 MHz contactless smart chip with 2k bits (256 bytes) across two application areas, in a thicker moulded card body. It is the least expensive way into iCLASS, and it reads on the same iCLASS and iCLASS SE readers as every other card in the family.

The trade-off is printing. A clamshell is thicker than a standard card and its back is a moulded HID logo, so it will not go through a card printer and cannot carry a photo ID. Choose it where the credential only has to open doors — contractors, temporary staff, large populations where cost per card matters — and use the printable iCLASS 2000 where the badge has to be seen as well as read.

The card ships with a vertical slot punch, or with printed slot indicators if you prefer to punch it yourself. To order programmed cards, give us your card format, your facility or site code, and the starting card number. They are printed on the box your current cards came in, or on your original HID paperwork.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Why is a clamshell cheaper than a standard card?
It is a simpler build. The chip and antenna sit in a thicker moulded body rather than a thin laminated card, and the back is a moulded HID logo rather than a printable surface. Electrically it is the same iCLASS credential and it reads on the same readers.
Can I print on a clamshell card?
No. It is too thick for a card printer and the back carries a moulded HID logo, so there is no photo ID and no magnetic stripe. If the badge has to be seen as well as read, use the printable iCLASS 2000. Many sites buy clamshells for contractors and temporary staff and printed cards for permanent employees.
What memory options does the clamshell come in?
Only 2k bits (256 bytes) with two application areas. HID does not build the clamshell in the 32k memory sizes, so if you need multi-application memory you need a standard card.
Does it come slotted?
You choose. A vertical slot punch can be applied at the factory at no additional charge, or the card can ship with printed vertical slot indicators so you punch it yourself.
What is the minimum order and how are quantities counted?
The minimum is 100 cards in increments of 100. Every run is made to order and encoded to your exact specification.
