Overview

Visitor badges that expire on their own

Two-part system: This badge back is not a full solution. A compatible badge front is required for use.

This is a 3" x 3" clip-on expiring badge back, part number T5903A, preprinted with a solid red bar and no title. It is the bottom half of a two-piece TEMPbadge visitor badge. When the badge expires, red stripes appear across the face, giving visual proof at a glance that the pass is no longer valid and cannot be reused.

How it works

Hidden red stripes sit under a black mask on this back part. The back does nothing on its own. Pressing a TEMPbadge front onto it starts the timer, and the front sets the expiration speed. That makes backs universal: the same box works with half-day, 1-day, and 7-day fronts. Clip-on backs need a badge clip or reel to wear. Any standard strap clip, swivel clip, or lanyard fits the slot.

What you need

A TEMPbadge front part, sold separately. Use T6151 thermal-printable fronts to print names from a badge printer, or T6103 handwritten fronts to fill them in by hand.

How it works

The color builds until the badge reads expired

Once the badge is activated, dye migrates at a steady rate and the expiring area shades from white to pink to red. These are the actual TEMPbadge lab shade charts; the dashed box marks the recommended expiration time.

One-day expiring badge color change by hour Half-day expiring badge color change by hour Seven-day expiring badge color change by day

Times are approximate. The timer is chemical: warmth and humidity speed it up, cool dry air slows it down.

Good to know

Expiration times are guidelines, not exact clocks. The timer is chemical and made for indoor use: warmer or more humid air runs it faster, cooler and drier air runs it slower. A 1-Day badge can expire in as little as 10 hours.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

How long until the badge expires?
The back does not set the time. Expiration timing comes from the front part you attach. Front parts are available in half-day (about 4 to 6 hours), 1-day (overnight, about 10 to 15 hours), and 7-day (about 4 to 7 days) versions.
Do badge backs work with any time frame?
Yes. Badge backs are universal. You can mix and match them with any front part time frame.
What else do I need?
An expiring badge front part. Attaching the front part to the back part starts the expiration process. Thermal-printable, inkjet-printable, and handwritten fronts are available.
Can badges be reused?
No. Once expiration starts it cannot be reversed, so uncollected badges cannot be reused by unauthorized visitors. Use a new front and back for each visit.
What happens visually when the badge expires?
Vivid red expiration bars appear across the badge so anyone can see at a glance that time is up. The color change is patented and cannot be undone.
What does box of 1,000 mean?
Quantity 1 equals one box containing 1,000 clip-on badge backs.
What is the printed color bar for?
The color bar, with or without a printed title such as VISITOR or CONTRACTOR, gives quick role recognition at a distance.
Do I need special hardware or software?
No. The clip-on back requires no equipment. If you choose thermal-printable front parts, you will need a compatible direct thermal printer for the fronts.
Do temperature and humidity affect the expiration time?
Yes. The expiration technology is chemical and designed for indoor use. Warmer or more humid environments make the badge expire faster; cooler, drier environments slow it down. The stated times are guidelines: a 1-Day badge can expire in as little as 10 hours, and a 7-Day badge can complete as early as day five.
Are these badges in stock?
Most TEMPbadge items on our site ship shortly after the order is placed. However, many items are made to order by the factory and typically take about 8 weeks, because the chemical timer performs best when fresh. Made-to-order items are marked on the product page. Contact us for current lead times.
