Direct-to-Card and Retransfer Printers Serve Different Needs

The two main types of card printers are direct-to-card (DTC) and reverse transfer printers. DTC printers apply ink directly to the card surface, making them a popular choice for employee ID cards, student IDs, and membership cards.

They print quickly, cost less upfront, and are easy to maintain. A reverse transfer printer works differently by printing onto a film first, then fusing that film onto the card. This produces edge-to-edge printing and sharper image quality, making it the preferred model for government credentials, banking cards, and secure cards. Factors like budget, card volume, and security level should guide which type you select.

Single-Sided and Dual-Sided ID Card Printers Offer Flexible Output

A single-sided ID printer puts information on one face of the card only. A dual-sided ID card printer automatically prints both sides in one pass, which is ideal when organizations need a photo on the front and a barcode or policy information on the back.

Dual-sided ID card printing saves time and keeps output consistent across the life of the system.

Encoding Capabilities Expand Card Functionality

Many ID card printers support encoding options beyond a printed image. These include:

  • Magnetic stripe encoding for swipe-access systems
  • RFID and smart card encoding for contactless entry
  • NFC credential writing for modern access control environments

The right encoding capability depends on the security infrastructure already in place at your facility.

Consumables Keep Your Printer Running

Every ID card printer requires a set of core supplies to maintain steady card production. Blank PVC cards, ribbon cartridges, and a cleaning kit are the essentials. Some printers also use laminate overlays to increase card durability and resist tampering.

Popular brands like Fargo are designed with software that simplifies setup and helps organizations choose the right settings for different card sizes. Stocking consumables in advance prevents downtime during high-volume printing periods.
