The HID FARGO HDP6600 (part number 94650, also listed as 094650) is a dual-sided 600 dpi retransfer ID card printer configured with Card Flattener. The integrated card flattener ensures technology cards leave the printer smooth and level after the high-heat retransfer process — important for smart card programs.
Retransfer (reverse transfer) printing images onto a clear HDP film and fuses that film to the card surface, so color reaches true over-the-edge coverage and conforms to the ridges of embedded electronics. At 600 dpi, the HDP6600 renders small text, complex characters and dense barcodes that 300 dpi direct-to-card printers cannot match — and because the printhead never touches the card, it carries a lifetime printhead warranty. It accepts 30 to 40 mil CR-80 cards, including proximity, smart, magnetic stripe and polycarbonate stock.
HID’s patent-pending iON (Instant On) technology brings the transfer roller to operating temperature in under 60 seconds, and batch printing reaches up to 230 cards per hour (YMCK with transfer). AES-256 data encryption and resin scramble data protection guard cardholder data through the print job, and the SmartScreen OLED control panel keeps operation simple. Connectivity is USB 2.0 and Ethernet with an internal print server. Every unit is backed by HID’s four-year printer warranty with one year of free loaner support (US), and Specialist ID is an authorized HID FARGO dealer.

What is retransfer printing, and why choose the HDP6600 over a direct-to-card printer?
Retransfer (reverse transfer) printers image onto a clear HDP film and then fuse that film to the card. Color reaches true over-the-edge coverage, and the film conforms to the ridges of embedded electronics, so smart and proximity cards come out looking flawless. Because the printhead never touches the card, the HDP6600's printhead carries a lifetime warranty. At 600 dpi it also renders small text and dense barcodes that 300 dpi direct-to-card printers cannot match.
How fast is the HDP6600?
In batch mode the HDP6600 prints up to 230 cards per hour with a YMCK ribbon (about 16 seconds per card with transfer), or up to 126 cards per hour with the dual-panel YMCKK ribbon. HID's patent-pending iON (Instant On) technology heats the transfer roller in under 60 seconds, so your first card is ready quickly instead of waiting minutes for warm-up.
What cards can the HDP6600 print on?
It accepts CR-80 cards from 30 to 40 mil thick, including PET, PETG, proximity, smart, magnetic stripe and polycarbonate stock. HID does not recommend ABS or plain PVC cards in the lamination module, so we recommend composite PVC/PET or polycarbonate cards for laminated programs.
Can it print dual-sided?
Dual-sided models print the front and back of each card automatically. Single-sided models can be field-upgraded to dual-sided printing with the HID 094050 dual-side printing module.
What supplies do I need?
Retransfer printing uses two consumables together: a print ribbon and the clear HDP film (084900, about 1,500 prints). Which ribbon depends on your model: single-sided printers use the YMCK full-color ribbon (750 prints), while dual-sided printers can step up to the YMCKK (600 prints), which adds a second resin black panel for sharp text and barcodes on card backs — the YMCKK is not used on single-sided models. The YMCFK (600 prints) adds a UV-fluorescing security panel, and the K resin black ribbon (3,000 prints) covers monochrome-only jobs. Every ribbon includes a replacement cleaning roller, and lamination models also use PolyGuard LMX overlaminates. What encoding options are available?
Four inline modules, all field-upgradeable: ISO magnetic stripe (dual high/low coercivity, tracks 1-3); contact chip encoding via the OMNIKEY 5122 (ISO 7816); contactless encoding via the OMNIKEY 5127CK Mini, which supports 13.56 MHz iCLASS Seos, iCLASS SE, MIFARE Classic and MIFARE DESFire EV1/EV2 plus 125 kHz HID Prox; and the programmer module (OMNIKEY 5127 iCLASS SE), which encodes the HID Access Control Application area of Genuine HID or third-party credentials.
What does the card flattener do?
The high heat of the retransfer process can bow some technology cards. The card flattener module ensures each card leaves the printer smooth and level, which matters for smart card programs where cards must sit flat in readers.
What is the difference between the one-material and two-material laminators?
The one/two refers to how many different laminate rolls the LMX module holds — not how many sides it laminates. The one-material laminator holds a single roll and applies that same laminate to the front or to both sides of the card; for example, clear PolyGuard front and back for everyday durability. The two-material laminator holds two rolls, so each side of the card can get a different laminate — for example, a holographic laminate on the front for security and a half-patch laminate on the back that leaves the magnetic stripe uncovered for swiping. Both versions use HID's wasteless LMX lamination technology, and iON heating means laminated first cards are ready sooner.
What software and drivers does it use?
HID publishes Windows drivers for Windows 7, 10, 11 and Server 2012 through 2022. The driver includes FARGO Workbench, HID's diagnostic utility with Color Assist spot-color matching. HID does not publish a macOS driver for the HDP6600.
What warranty comes with the HDP6600?
HDP6600 printers purchased on or after August 1, 2024 carry a four-year manufacturer warranty that includes one year of free printer loaner support in the US. The printhead is covered for life with unlimited card passes. Specialist ID is an authorized HID FARGO dealer, so your warranty is fully valid.
How does the HDP6600 protect cardholder data?
Print jobs travel with AES-256 data encryption, and resin scramble data protection renders used ribbon panels indecipherable so discarded consumables cannot be read. Optional physical locks secure the card hoppers and consumables access against unauthorized use.
