Professional credentials, printed at your desk

The IDP SMART-31D prints both sides of an ID card in one pass. A built-in flipper turns each card, so you can put a photo and name on the front and a barcode, terms or emergency contacts on the back. It suits small offices, schools and member programs that want two-sided cards from a compact desktop printer.

It prints edge to edge at 300 dpi from an 80-card automatic hopper (40 with its cover closed): up to 180 single-sided color cards per hour, or 138 dual-sided cards per hour with a YMCKOK ribbon (color front, black back). Genuine IDP ribbons carry an RFID tag the printer reads to recognize the ribbon type, and the same ribbons fit the SMART-51. A YMCFKO ribbon adds an invisible UV image for low-cost security, and passwords, PC authentication and encrypted print data protect the printer. The Ethernet module prints and encodes over your network and can accept print commands without a driver.

This is the print-only configuration with USB and Ethernet. To encode cards, add a magnetic stripe, contact or contactless smart card encoder from the upgrades in the buy box. IDP's SMART IDesigner card design software is included free (Windows, download). If you design on a Mac or print from a bigger database, ID-ALL is the step up; it supports IDP SMART printers on Windows and Mac.

Frequently asked questions

What ribbons does the SMART-31 use?
Genuine IDP SMART-31/51 ribbons. The printer reads an RFID tag on each ribbon to recognize it, so it needs IDP ribbons. The everyday choice is the 659366 YMCKO color ribbon (250 prints) or 659863 (100 prints); dual-sided models also take the 659376 YMCKOK ribbon (200 prints) for color on the front and black on the back. Monochrome, UV, pearlescent and half-panel ribbons are listed under Compatible Supplies. SMART-21 and SMART-30 ribbons do not fit.
What is the difference between the 9009xx ribbon kits and the regular ribbons?
The 9009xx parts (900900, 900901, 900903, and 900902 for dual-sided) come pre-loaded in a cassette, ready to drop in. The regular 6593xx ribbons load into the reusable cassette that stays in the printer. The printing is the same.
What cards does it print on?
Standard ISO CR80 cards (2.12 x 3.38 in), 15 to 30 mil thick, in PVC or PVC/PET composite. The input hopper holds 80 cards and the output tray 25. Compatible blank cards are listed on this page.
Can it encode cards?
Yes, with an encoder added to the printer. IDP offers a magnetic stripe encoder (ISO 7811, tracks 1-3, HiCo and LoCo), a contact smart card encoder (ISO 7816) and a 13.56 MHz contactless encoder (MIFARE, DESFire, iCLASS, ISO 14443 A/B). Add the one you need from the upgrades on this page.
Can I upgrade a SMART-31S to print both sides later?
Yes. IDP's 651315 flipper assembly converts a SMART-31S into a SMART-31D in the field. If you already know you need both sides, the SMART-31D configuration is the simpler buy.
Does the SMART-31 work with a Mac?
The printer does: IDP provides a macOS driver (macOS 11 and later) along with Windows 10/11 and Linux drivers. The free SMART IDesigner software runs on Windows only. To design and print cards from a Mac, use ID-ALL, which supports IDP SMART printers on Windows and Mac.
What software comes with it?
SMART IDesigner, IDP's card design and issuance software, is included free and downloads from IDP. It handles photos, text, 1D and 2D barcodes, sequential numbers, Excel, CSV and Access imports, and card encoding through plug-ins. It is Windows only. ID-ALL is the step up for Mac users and larger database work.
What warranty does it have?
IDP covers the SMART-31 with a 3-year Advanced Exchange warranty: when a problem can't be fixed over the phone, IDP's advance replacement may apply, so a replacement printer can ship before yours is repaired. Extended warranties for a 4th year (900504) or 4th and 5th years (900505) are available; they do not cover print heads. Specialist ID is an authorized IDP dealer.
