The IDP SMART-51S is a single-sided ID card printer built for daily, higher-volume badge printing in offices, schools, hospitals and government agencies. It is built on a ruggedized metal frame with steel ball bearings, and it takes cards from 15 to 40 mil, including thicker composite and smart cards.

It prints a full-color card edge to edge at 300 dpi in about 17 seconds, up to 212 cards per hour, and monochrome at 720 per hour. The hopper holds 100 cards, or 200 with the cover open, and a two-line LCD shows printer status. Genuine IDP ribbons carry an RFID tag the printer reads to recognize the ribbon type, and the same ribbons fit the SMART-31. A YMCFKO ribbon adds an invisible UV image, and passwords, PC authentication and encrypted print data protect the printer, with optional physical locks. The Ethernet module prints and encodes over your network; a Wi-Fi kit can be added to it.

This is the print-only configuration with USB and Ethernet. To encode cards, add a magnetic stripe, contact or contactless smart card encoder from the upgrades in the buy box; IDP installs some contactless encoders and the CR79 card size at the factory only, so choose those with the printer. The SMART-51S can be field-upgraded to dual-sided printing with IDP's flipper, or to a SMART-51L with the laminator. IDP's SMART IDesigner card design software is included free (Windows, download). If you design on a Mac or print from a bigger database, ID-ALL is the step up; it supports IDP SMART printers on Windows and Mac.

Frequently asked questions

What ribbons does the SMART-51 use?

Genuine IDP SMART-31/51 ribbons; the SMART-51 and SMART-31 share the same ribbons. The printer reads an RFID tag on each ribbon, so it needs IDP ribbons. Most people use the 659366 YMCKO color ribbon (250 prints) or 659863 (100 prints). The dual-sided SMART-51D and SMART-51L also take the 659376 YMCKOK ribbon (200 prints) for color on the front and black on the back; YMCKO prints both sides too: full color on each side uses two panel sets per card, or the split-panel setting prints color front and black back. SMART-21 and SMART-50 ribbons do not fit.

What cards does it print on?

ISO CR80 cards from 15 to 40 mil thick, in PVC or PVC/PET composite. The input hopper holds 100 cards (200 with the hopper cover open) and the front output holds 40. CR79 cards need the CR79 option, which IDP installs at the factory. Compatible blank cards are listed on this page.

Which encoders are available, and which are factory-only?

IDP offers magnetic stripe encoders (standard 651356 or upper-position 651358), a contact smart card encoder (651359) and contactless encoders: 653035 (HID OMNIKEY 5122, USB) or 651362 on Ethernet printers. The dual-frequency 900714 encoder (13.56 MHz and 125 kHz prox reading) and the 900715 reader are for USB printers only. IDP lists 653035, 900714, 900715 and the CR79 card size as factory installation only, so order them with the printer.

Can I upgrade a SMART-51S or SMART-51D later?

Yes. The 651366 flipper turns a SMART-51S into a dual-sided printer, and the 651310 laminator with flipper upgrades a SMART-51S or SMART-51D to a SMART-51L in the field.

What does the SMART-51L laminator add?

It applies a 1 mil clear or holographic patch laminate over the printed card, on one or both sides, for durability and visual security. It heats up in about 8 seconds and prints and laminates up to 164 cards per hour (YMCK with single-side lamination). SMART-51 laminates come 250 patches per roll, or 125 cards per roll for alternating front and back rolls, and fit only the SMART-51L.

Does the SMART-51 work with a Mac?

The printer does: IDP provides a macOS driver (macOS 11 and later) along with Windows 10/11 and Linux drivers. The free SMART IDesigner software runs on Windows only. To design and print cards from a Mac, use ID-ALL, which supports IDP SMART printers on Windows and Mac.

What software comes with it?

SMART IDesigner, IDP's card design and issuance software, is included free and downloads from IDP. It handles photos, text, 1D and 2D barcodes, sequential numbers, Excel, CSV and Access imports, and card encoding through plug-ins. It is Windows only. ID-ALL is the step up for Mac users and larger database work.

What warranty does it have?

IDP covers the SMART-51 with a 3-year Advanced Exchange warranty: when a problem can't be fixed over the phone, IDP's advance replacement may apply, so a replacement printer can ship before yours is repaired. Extended warranties for a 4th year (900504) or 4th and 5th years (900505) are available; they do not cover print heads. Specialist ID is an authorized IDP dealer.
