The IDP SMART-81DS is the secure version of the SMART-81D dual-sided retransfer ID card printer, built by IDP with its Banking Security Features for instant bank card issuance and other high-security credential programs. It prints each image onto a clear retransfer film and bonds that film onto the card, so color runs right to the edges on both sides of blank cards and technology cards.
IDP's Rapid Retransfer Printing (RRP) skips the long warm-up of older retransfer printers, so the printer is ready within seconds of power-on. An internal flipper prints the back; with a YMCKK ribbon it prints full color on the front and resin black on the back at up to 84 cards per hour. Every SMART-81 also has administrator and user passwords, PC authentication that ties the printer to an authorized computer, and encrypted print data over USB and SSL over Ethernet.
This is the 300 dpi dual-sided configuration with IDP's Banking Security Features; ask us for IDP's current details on what they include for your security review. Add magnetic stripe, contact or contactless smart card encoding, Wi-Fi, a physical security lock or the SMART-81L laminator from the upgrades in the buy box. What is retransfer printing, and why choose it?
A retransfer printer prints the image onto a clear retransfer film first, then a heated roller bonds that film onto the card. Because the print head never touches the card, color runs edge to edge (IDP calls it Infinity Printing) on blank cards and on technology cards such as smart cards. IDP's Rapid Retransfer Printing (RRP) skips the long warm-up of older retransfer printers, so the SMART-81 is ready seconds after power-on.
What ribbon and film does the SMART-81 use?
Every SMART-81 job needs a color ribbon plus retransfer film. The simplest choice is the 653547 pack: a YMCK color ribbon and a retransfer film, 500 images each. The 653378 YMCKK ribbon (full color front, resin black back, for dual-sided models) and the 653379 YMCFK ribbon (adds a UV panel) come without film, so pair them with 653431 retransfer film. Rolls carry an RF tag that the printer reads, so use genuine IDP SMART-81 supplies.
Does it print on both sides of the card?
The SMART-81S prints one side. The SMART-81D, SMART-81DS, SMART-81HD and SMART-81HDS are dual-sided, with an internal flipper that turns the card for the back. Choose the version you need in the selector above.
Can the SMART-81 laminate cards?
Yes, with the SMART-81L laminator module (653635), which attaches beside the printer as a field upgrade and talks to it by infrared. It applies clear or holographic 1 mil patches (500 per roll) or ThinFilm overlay (1,000 per roll). The 900850 Globe Flags ThinFilm is for single-sided lamination only. IDP lists the SMART-81L for the SMART-81D and SMART-81HD.
What encoding options are available, and which must be installed at the factory?
The SMART-81 takes a magnetic stripe encoder (ISO 7811 tracks 1-3, HiCo/LoCo, 653538), a contact smart card encoder (ISO 7816, 653539), a 13.56 MHz contactless encoder (ISO 14443 A/B, MIFARE, DESFire, iCLASS, 653540) or a combined contact and contactless encoder (653708). The IDP dual-frequency encoder (900714) and dual-frequency reader (900715), which add 125 kHz Prox reading, are factory-installed only, so order them with the printer. Add encoding from the upgrades in the buy box.
Does the SMART-81 work with a Mac?
IDP publishes SMART-81 drivers for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit), macOS 11 and later, and Linux. IDP's free SMART IDesigner software runs on Windows only, so on a Mac use ID-ALL card design software, which supports IDP SMART printers on Windows and Mac.
What software comes with it?
Every SMART printer includes IDP's SMART IDesigner at no charge, as a Windows download. It designs cards with photos, text and 1D/2D barcodes, crops portraits automatically, prints sequential numbers, imports data from Excel, CSV or Access, and runs magnetic stripe and smart card encoding through plug-ins. For Mac or larger database work, ID-ALL is the step up.
What is the difference between the SMART-81D and the SMART-81HD?
Both are dual-sided retransfer printers on the same chassis. The SMART-81D prints at 300 dpi; the SMART-81HD prints at 600 x 600 dpi for finer detail in photos, small text and graphics. The SMART-81DS and SMART-81HDS are the same printers built with IDP's Banking Security Features.
What warranty does the SMART-81 carry?
IDP covers the SMART-81 with a 3-year Advanced Exchange warranty and a lifetime print head warranty. Optional extended warranties add a fourth year (900514) or fourth and fifth years (900515) of advanced exchange. Specialist ID is an authorized IDP dealer.
