The IDP SMART-32S is a compact single-sided ID card printer for low- to mid-volume printing: employee badges, member cards and student IDs in offices, schools and small organizations. It prints full-color or monochrome cards edge to edge at 300 dpi and weighs 7.1 lb.

A full-color card prints at up to 260 cards per hour, and monochrome at up to 720. The hopper feeds 80 cards automatically into a removable 25-card output tray. Ribbons are larger than on earlier SMART models, with 350 prints on a YMCKO roll and a cleaning roller in the box, so changeovers come less often. A YMCFKO ribbon adds an invisible UV image, and a 2-line LCD with two LED buttons shows printer status at the front.

This is the print-only configuration with USB and built-in Ethernet. To encode cards, add a magnetic stripe, contact or contactless smart card encoder from the upgrades in the buy box; IDP installs the dual-frequency encoder at the factory, so choose it with the printer. Wi-Fi is available as an upgrade, and IDP's flipper turns the SMART-32S into a dual-sided printer in the field. IDP's SMART IDesigner card design software is included free (Windows, download). If you design on a Mac or print from a bigger database, ID-ALL is the step up; it supports IDP SMART printers on Windows and Mac.

Frequently asked questions

What ribbons does the SMART-32 use?

SMART-32 and SMART-52 ribbons, which carry IDP's yellow ribbon tag. The everyday choice is the 654013 YMCKO color ribbon (350 prints), or 900911, the same ribbon pre-loaded in a cassette. The dual-sided SMART-32D also takes the 654014 YMCKOK ribbon (300 prints) for color on the front and black on the back. Each ribbon comes with a cleaning roller. SMART-31 and SMART-51 ribbons do not fit, although the SMART-32 ribbon cartridge is the same as the SMART-31's.

What cards does it print on?

ISO CR80 cards (2.12 x 3.38 in), 15 to 30 mil thick, in PVC, PET or composite PVC. The hopper holds 80 cards and the removable output tray holds 25. Compatible blank cards are listed on this page.

What is the difference between the LCD and no-display models?

The LCD models (654221 and 654222) have a 2-line LCD and two LED buttons on the front. The no-display models (654223 and 654224) have a single LED button. The printing is the same, and IDP's 654403 kit adds the LCD to a no-display printer later.

Which encoders are available?

IDP offers a magnetic stripe encoder (654130), a contact smart card encoder (654131), and contactless encoders: the 654229 (OK5122) and the dual-frequency 900714 (OK5127, 13.56 MHz and 125 kHz prox reading). IDP lists the 900714 as factory installation, so order it with the printer.

Can I add dual-sided printing or Wi-Fi later?

Yes. The 654134 flipper converts a SMART-32S into a SMART-32D in the field, and the 654228 kit adds 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. USB and Ethernet are built in on every SMART-32.

Does the SMART-32 work with a Mac?

IDP lists Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11, Mac OS and Linux as supported platforms. The included SMART IDesigner software runs on Windows only. To design and print cards from a Mac, use ID-ALL, which supports IDP SMART printers on Windows and Mac.

What warranty does it have?

IDP's warranty runs three years and covers the printer, print heads up to 20,000 prints, encoders, parts and labor. Advance Replacement may apply. Specialist ID is an authorized IDP dealer.
