The IDP SMART-52L is a dual-sided ID card printer with a laminator attached, for credentials that have to last and resist tampering: government and military IDs, healthcare and first-responder badges, and access control cards. It prints the card, then seals it under a clear or holographic patch laminate on one or both sides.

It prints and laminates up to 160 cards per hour in simultaneous mode (YMCK, single lamination), or 125 one by one. Laminate rolls come in clear, smart-card cutout and holographic patterns such as Globe Flags, Celestial, Genuine Medical and Secure Globe, with alternating rolls for different front and back patches. The printer side has a ruggedized metal frame, a touchscreen that controls every function with no PC needed, and a hopper that holds 100 cards, or 200 with the cover open. Physical locks for the hopper, ribbon and laminate film are an option.

This is the print-only configuration with USB and built-in Ethernet. To encode cards, add a magnetic stripe, contact or contactless smart card encoder from the upgrades in the buy box; IDP installs the contactless encoders at the factory, so choose those with the printer. Wi-Fi and a 100-card rear stacker are available as upgrades. IDP's SMART IDesigner card design software is included free (Windows, download). If you design on a Mac or print from a bigger database, ID-ALL is the step up; it supports IDP SMART printers on Windows and Mac.

Frequently asked questions

What ribbons does the SMART-52 use?

SMART-32 and SMART-52 ribbons, which carry IDP's yellow ribbon tag. The everyday choice is the 654013 YMCKO color ribbon (350 prints), or 900911, the same ribbon pre-loaded in a cassette. The dual-sided SMART-52D and SMART-52L also take the 654014 YMCKOK ribbon (300 prints) for color on the front and black on the back. Each ribbon comes with a cleaning roller. SMART-31 and SMART-51 ribbons do not fit, although the SMART-52 ribbon cartridge is the same as the SMART-51's.

What cards does it print on?

ISO CR80 cards (2.12 x 3.38 in) from 15 to 40 mil thick, in PVC, PET or composite PVC, plus transparent cards with a magnetic stripe. The input hopper holds 100 cards (200 with the cover open) and the front output holds 40; IDP's 659910 rear stacker holds 100. Compatible blank cards are listed on this page.

Which encoders are available?

IDP offers magnetic stripe encoders (standard 654130 or upper-position 654152), a contact smart card encoder (654131), and contactless encoders: the 654235 (OK5122) and the dual-frequency 900714 (OK5127, 13.56 MHz and 125 kHz prox reading). IDP lists both contactless encoders as factory installation, so order them with the printer.

Can a SMART-52S be upgraded?

IDP's 654135 flipper adds dual-sided printing to a SMART-52S, and the 654136 laminator with flipper adds dual-sided printing and lamination. The 654213 kit adds 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. USB and Ethernet are built in on every SMART-52.

What does the SMART-52L laminator add?

It applies a clear or holographic patch over the printed card, on one or both sides, for durability and visual security. It prints and laminates up to 160 cards per hour (YMCK, simultaneous, single lamination). Most laminate rolls hold 250 patches, and they fit only the SMART-52L.

Does the SMART-52 work with a Mac?

IDP lists Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11, Mac OS and Linux as supported platforms. The included SMART IDesigner software runs on Windows only. To design and print cards from a Mac, use ID-ALL, which supports IDP SMART printers on Windows and Mac.

What warranty does it have?

IDP's warranty runs three years and covers the printer, print heads up to 20,000 prints, laminators, encoders, parts and labor. Advance Replacement may apply. Specialist ID is an authorized IDP dealer.
