Overview

Professional credentials, printed at your desk

The Entrust Sigma DS1 Manual Feed printer is the compact, front-counter version of the Sigma DS1: the 125-card input hopper and LED light bars are removed, and you feed one card at a time through the front slot. That makes it the right pick for visitor management desks, reception counters, and programs that switch between multiple pre-printed cardstocks on the fly — at a lower price than the standard DS1, in a smaller and lighter chassis.

About the Identiv encoder in this configuration

This configuration includes the factory-installed Identiv all-in-one smart card encoder (kit 531291-001). It personalizes both contact chip cards (ISO 7816 — the gold-pad chips you insert) and contactless credentials (ISO 14443 A/B and ISO 15693, including MIFARE and MIFARE DESFire EV1/EV2). It is a loosely coupled encoder: the reader connects to the host PC through its own USB cable, which makes it the flexible choice for third-party issuance software that talks to readers directly. Choose the HID Omnikey option instead if your building access runs on HID iCLASS, Seos, or Prox credentials.

Magnetic stripe encoding built in

This configuration writes ISO 7811 magnetic stripes — tracks 1, 2 and 3, high- or low-coercivity — inline as each card prints, so badges come out of the printer ready to swipe.

Secure by design

The Sigma platform treats the printer as a trusted IoT device: Secure Boot blocks tampered firmware at power-up, a Trusted Platform Module holds the printer’s own TLS certificates, every connection to your issuance software is encrypted, and no cardholder data remains in the printer after the card prints. Add UV fluorescent or luster security ribbons for visible and covert card authentication without extra hardware.

Cloud, on-premises, or pay-as-you-print

Drive the DS1 with Entrust Adaptive Issuance Instant ID software on your network, from the cloud — including simultaneous issuance of a physical card and a digital mobile flashpass — or through Instant ID as a Service ribbons that bundle the cloud software license into the ribbon itself. A standard Windows driver covers third-party software.

Specialist ID is an authorized Entrust partner — your printer, supplies, and 36-month warranty are fully backed by Entrust.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

What is direct-to-card printing, and is the Sigma DS1 right for me?
Direct-to-card (DTC) printers like the Sigma DS1 print dye-sublimation color straight onto the card surface — fast, economical, and ideal for everyday employee badges, student IDs, visitor cards, and membership cards. If you need over-the-edge coverage on technology cards, look at a retransfer printer instead; for most ID programs, DTC is the right choice.
What encoding options can I add?
Three options, factory-built to order: ISO magnetic stripe encoding (tracks 1-3, HiCo/LoCo), an Identiv smart card encoder (contact chips plus MIFARE/DESFire contactless), and an HID Omnikey contactless encoder (iCLASS, iCLASS SE, Seos, and HID Prox, plus MIFARE/DESFire). Pick any combination of magnetic stripe and one smart card encoder with the selector above. Every option can also be field-installed later by an Entrust-authorized partner.
Should I choose the Identiv or the HID Omnikey smart card encoder?
Choose by your credential technology. The Identiv encoder handles both contact chips (the gold-pad cards you insert) and standard contactless cards like MIFARE and DESFire. The HID Omnikey encoder is contactless-only but adds HID's credential family — iCLASS, iCLASS SE, Seos, and 125 kHz HID Prox — making it the pick when your door access system runs on HID cards. Both cost the same.
What is the Manual Feed model?
The Manual Feed DS1 (525300-006) removes the 125-card input hopper and LED light bars — you feed one card at a time through the front slot. It is smaller, lighter, and less expensive, and it shines at visitor-management desks and front counters, or when you switch between several pre-printed cardstocks and want direct control of which card goes in next.
What supplies does the Sigma DS1 use?
Genuine Entrust Sigma supplies only (the 525xxx family) — the printer authenticates each ribbon over an encrypted RFID handshake and will not print with third-party ribbons. Supplies from the older Datacard SD and CD series do NOT fit the Sigma platform. Every compatible ribbon, card, and cleaning kit is listed on this page.
What software do I use with it?
Three paths: Entrust Adaptive Issuance Instant ID software (on-premises or cloud), Instant ID as a Service — where the cloud software license is bundled into special IIDaaS ribbons so you pay as you print — or your own badging software through the standard XPS Windows driver.
Can it issue digital IDs too?
Yes. Paired with Entrust cloud issuance software, the DS1 can issue a physical card and a digital mobile flashpass at the same time — the cardholder gets an email or text that adds the ID to their phone's wallet with a scannable bar code or QR code.
What warranty does it include, and is Specialist ID an authorized dealer?
Every Sigma DS1 carries Entrust's 36-month warranty covering both the printer and the printhead. Specialist ID is an authorized Entrust partner, so your printer, supplies, and warranty are fully backed by Entrust.
